February 14 and 15: Enriching the musical palette with composer/artist Anna Clyne
From Chuck's Culture Channel, my YouTube vlog.
My guest in this episode is composer and artist Anna Clyne. Her new multi-media work “Palette” has its world premiere at 7:30 pm on Friday and Saturday, February 14th and 15th 2025 with the Stephane Deneve and the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra.
“Palette” is in seven five-minute movements. Each movement is based on a different color whose first letters collectively spell the title of the work: Plum, Amber, Lava, Ebony, Teal, Tangerine and Emerald. Clyne has created paintings to go with each color and we’ll see those during the interview.
"Palette" also uses a musical technique developed by Clyne and Jody Elff (also credited with Sound Design for these concerts) that’s called “the augmented orchestra.” We talk about that and play some live examples.
Also on this coming weekend’s program: Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet Overture-Fantasy and Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 with soloist Nikolai Lugansky. The concert takes place at the Touhill Performing Arts Center on the University of Missouri—St. Louis campus. Saturday night’s concert will be broadcast live on St. Louis Public Radio and Classic 107.3, and will be available as an on-demand stream for a month starting the week of February 17th.
