Aquarian Rising Productions presents Johnnie Taylor is Gone, written by Gregory S. Carr directed by Thomasina Clarke, Fridays and Saturdays at 7 pm and Sundays at 4 pm, April 25 through May 4. “The Golden Zodiac Lounge is a place of contradictions. It boasts of its heritage of the past, but stubbornly resists preparing for the future. It wants to reach out to a larger clientele, but is hesitant to embrace what that entails. The owner, Will Strong and his other friends in the bar spend time philosophizing over the state of Black America with topics ranging from sports and music, to politics and religion. This “Old School” bar is governed by an old jukebox, which serves as a “chorus” for the play. Each character has a song on the jukebox to whom he or she identifies. The conflict begins when a young “Thundercat” in the neighborhood named Jiggy wants to buy the bar and change it into a hip-hop club; facilitating a generational clash. The Golden Zodiac is a place where Johnnie Taylor is king and Koko Taylor is queen in this two-act comedy.” Performances take place at Jefferson Avenue Mission, 2241 Jefferson in the Fox Park neighborhood. Fly North Theatricals presents the musical Little Miss Sunshine by William Finn and James Lapine Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 pm and Sundays at 2 pm, April 25 through May 4. “Based on the 2006 film, when Olive Hoover their youngest child enters a regional children's beauty pageant, her dysfunctional family embarks on a cross-country trek chasing brighter days and the coveted title of "Little Miss Sunshine." From the minds behind "…Spelling Bee" and "Into The Woods", hearts will be filled and badankadonks will be shaken. Presented free/pay-what-you-want as part of FNT’s Theater For All Initiative” Performances take place at The Greenfinch Theatre and Dive, 2525 S. Jefferson. For more information: flynorthmusic.com.
St. Louis University Theatre presents the musical Ride the Cyclone Thursday through Saturday at 7 pm, and Friday and Saturday at 1 pm, April 25 through 26. “In this hilarious and outlandish story, the lives of six teenagers from a Canadian chamber choir are cut short in a freak accident aboard a roller coaster. When they wake in limbo, a mechanical fortune teller invites each to tell a story to win a prize like no other — the chance to return to life. This popular musical is a funny, moving look at what makes a life well-lived!” Performances take place at the Grandel Theatre in Grand Center. For more information: www.slu.edu.
Stray Dog Theatre presents the musical Rock of Ages Thursdays through Saturdays at 8 through April 26. “Big bands, big egos, big guitar solos…and even bigger hair! Rock of Ages tells the story of a small-town girl, a city boy, and a rock ‘n’ roll romance on the Sunset Strip. But when the bar where rock reigns supreme is set to be demolished, it’s up to these wannabe stars and their band of friends to save the day. Get ready to rock all night to hits from the famous glam metal bands of the '80s. The musical features songs from Styx, Journey, Bon Jovi, Pat Benatar, Twisted Sister, Poison, Europe, and more.” Performances take place at Tower Grove Abbey, 2336 Tennessee in Tower Grove East. Upstream Theater presents Meet Me at Dawn by Zinnie Harris, through April 27. “Two women wash up on a distant shore following a boating accident. Dazed by their experience, they look for a path home. But they discover that this unfamiliar land is not what it seems — and that, though they may be together, they have never been further apart. A deeply moving, lyrical meditation inspired by the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice.” Performances take place at The Marcelle in Grand Center. For more information: www.upstreamtheater.org.
